Myanmar: Thousands Gather for Interfaith Rallies

YANGON — Religious leaders of Myanmar called for unity and peace as they gathered at the country’s first mass interfaith rally at Aung San Stadium in Yangon on Tuesday. It was the first major push for improved relations between followers of different faiths since an eruption of deadly violence in August inflamed communal tensions, especially between Buddhists and Muslims, and triggered an exodus of some 520,000 Muslims to Bangladesh.

Myanmar: Interfaith rally invokes co-existence, chides international community’s criticism

Speaking at a mass interfaith gathering on Tuesday, the head of the Rangoon archdiocese denounced the international community’s criticism of Burma over the ongoing Arakan crisis and asked for international support as the country works to resolve the issues blighting its westernmost state.

Some think interfaith dialogue goes nowhere. A veteran rabbi begs to differ.

Ron Kronish, an American-born rabbi in Israel, has devoted much of his life to dialogue among Jews, Muslims and Christians. His new book discusses the merits of dialogue. He says, the Vatican’s increasingly warm relations with Israel, for example, were rooted not only in diplomatic moves but 35 years of “systemic and substantive progress in Jewish-Catholic relations” fostered by hard-working priests and rabbis.

Chinese police order Muslims to hand in all copies of the Koran and prayer mats or face ‘harsh punishment’

CHINA: Chinese authorities are reportedly stepping up their campaign against Muslims in the north-western region of Xinjiang. According to sources in the region, officials have been warning neighbourhoods and mosques that ethnic minority Muslim families are being forced to hand in religious items including the Koran and prayer mats.
